Our Coffees
Our Coffee Selection
Our premium Ugandan coffee is special for several compelling reasons. Below are some details and further expanded information is included in the page for each named bean variety that we carry. All of these run through our very extensive background checks which include: cooperative inspection, supplier qualifications, quality control, flavor profile, and bean characteristics.
Unique Flavor Profiles
Ugandan coffee, particularly its robusta, liberica and arabica varieties, offer unique tasting notes. Robusta is known for its bold, earthy richness with hints of chocolate. Liberica is a rare and exotic hidden gem. While Ugandan arabica, grown at higher altitudes, is celebrated for its chocolaty, fruity, floral undertones and well-balanced acidity. These distinct flavors provide a fresh experience for coffee aficionados seeking flavor varieties. Expanding beyond our original Ugandan focus, we've added coffee beans from Mexico. First, we added decaffeinated beans from Veracruz. We are currently evaluating other premium beans from Mexico, Brazil, Costa Rica, Ethiopia and more.
Roasting Process
At Pneuma Java, our Ugandan coffee is not roasted like others may choose to do. We are focused on the experience rather than temperatures, color or visual results. Our process includes those things, but a priority is placed upon scent, flavor and the final product that you get to taste. We feel that your coffee should be an experience, pleasure and adventure. The aim to get you to experience all the flavor, allows all that the coffee beans are harvested with to shine through. In the single-origin coffees we literally add nothing but love. Should we add flavorings like pumpkin spice, coconut, or more, they will be fully called out on the packaging. Finally, as we start to build an offering of blends, they will be carefully selected based upon the flavors of the beans to keep the goal of each cup being a pleasureful adventure.
Quality and Sustainability
Our coffee farmers are generally smallholders which mean they have around one to two acres of land to farm. They generally adhere to sustainable farming practices, with our best beans being certified by organizations like the Rainforest Alliance. It is from this small environment that we are able to ensure that we only bring the best beans to market. Moving up to our cooperatives, they are selected for their fair wages and ethical treatment of the farms. This focus on quality and ethics ensures a guilt-free indulgence for conscientious consumers. Everything in the chain from the farmer to your cup is carefully selected to ensure that all parties along the line are well
Rare Offerings
With Uganda being rediscovered as a producer of unique Liberica coffee, coffee lovers gain access to a rare and exotic variety that enhances their coffee journey. Most consumers are familiar with the arabica coffee sold by most coffee shops. Robusta coffee is included in many coffee blends. The Liberica, however, is a flavorful, unique bean that many have overlooked since it was originally discovered in Africa in the 1870s. We aim to find rare items like the Liberica coffee to call attention to the special qualities of those farms and beans. Our long term goal is to allow our customers to experience the exceptional, exquisite, and the amazing. We find it so you can enjoy it.
Cultural Connection
Buying our coffees connect consumers to a rich coffee heritage and supports communities directly involved in cultivating and processing coffee, fostering a deeper appreciation for its origins. Our coffees directly impact more than just the farmer who planted, raised and selectively harvested the beans. The sales of these coffees directly impacts the communities around these farmers. By ensuring that our cooperatives fairly compensate the farms, we know that we are providing for a better future for them. Beyond that, we also focus on communities. We have chosen to start with Uganda and will ultimately expand beyond those borders into Mexico and more.
Versatility
Our coffee beans are generally highly adaptable, excelling in various brewing methods, from espresso to pour-over, making them essential for experimenting with diverse preparation styles. These beans also pair nicely with most flavorings, creamers and other coffees. Based upon our roasting styles, it generally takes far less additives to impact the flavor of the coffee.
Premium Ugandan coffee, like Pneuma Java’s offerings, is not just a beverage—it's a celebration of craftsmanship, flavor, and the positive social impact coffee can create.
